Indications
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults
- Adjunct to diet and exercise
- Use in patients insufficiently controlled on maximally tolerated dose of Metformin alone
- Use in combination with other medicinal products for diabetes
- Use in patients already being treated with the combination of Empagliflozin and Metformin separately
Pharmacology
- Inhibitor of Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter 2 (SGLT2)
- Reduction of renal reabsorption of filtered glucose
- Lowering of renal threshold for glucose
- Increase in urinary glucose excretion
- Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
- Lowers both basal and postprandial plasma glucose
- Does not produce hypoglycemia
- Decreases hepatic glucose production
- Decreases intestinal absorption of glucose
- Improves insulin sensitivity
Dosage & Administration
- Individualized based on effectiveness and tolerability
- Twice daily with meals
- Gradual dose escalation to reduce gastrointestinal side effects
- Maximum recommended daily doses of Metformin Hydrochloride and Empagliflozin
- Extended-release formulations available
- Dosing adjustment for renal impaired patients
- Not recommended for pediatric patients under 18 years of age

Overdose Effects
- No toxicity seen with single/multiple doses of Empagliflozin
- Hypoglycemia not seen with Metformin

- Haemodialysis for removal of lactate and Metformin
