Indications

  • Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
  • Symptomatic treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
  • Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria

Pharmacology

  • Non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
  • Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
  • Inhibition of mast cell degranulation
  • Inhibition of cytokine release

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dose for adults and adolescents (over 12 years): 10 mg once a day
  • Recommended dose for children aged 2 to 11 years based on weight

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration with ketoconazole or erythromycin increases systemic exposure
  • Caution with statins, CNS depressants, and alcohol
  • Avoid concomitant intake with grapefruit or grapefruit juice

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or excipients

Side Effects

  • Common: Asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
  • Uncommon: Appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, constipation, cough, diarrhea, dry throat
  • Rare: Palpitations, tachycardia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended during pregnancy unless benefits outweigh risks
  • Not recommended during lactation without justification for benefits

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval
  • Use with caution in elderly patients
  • Not recommended for use in patients with impaired kidney or liver function

Use in Special Populations

  • Use with caution in elderly patients
  • Not established for patients less than 12 years of age
  • Not recommended for patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency

Overdose Effects

  • Most common adverse reaction: somnolence
  • Symptomatic treatment for accidental ingestion of very high doses
