Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibition of mast cell degranulation
- Inhibition of cytokine release
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents (over 12 years): 10 mg once a day
- Recommended dose for children aged 2 to 11 years based on weight
Interaction
- Concomitant administration with ketoconazole or erythromycin increases systemic exposure
- Caution with statins, CNS depressants, and alcohol
- Avoid concomitant intake with grapefruit or grapefruit juice
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or excipients
Side Effects
- Common: Asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: Appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, constipation, cough, diarrhea, dry throat
- Rare: Palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless benefits outweigh risks
- Not recommended during lactation without justification for benefits
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- Not recommended for use in patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- Not established for patients less than 12 years of age
- Not recommended for patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Most common adverse reaction: somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment for accidental ingestion of very high doses
