Pharmacology

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic properties, and uricosuric effect. Inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis, rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, metabolized in the liver, and undergoes first pass metabolism.

Dosage & Administration

  • Diclofenac FC Tablet: Adults 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses
  • Diclofenac SR Tablet: Adults 1 tablet daily, Children 1-3 mg/kg body wt. daily, Elderly patients lowest effective dosage recommended
  • Diclofenac Dispersible Tablet: Adults 2-3 tablets daily, maximum daily dose 150 mg, Children dose based on body weight
  • Diclofenac TR Capsule: One capsule daily, preferably after mealtimes
  • Diclofenac Suppository: Adults 50 mg suppository 2-3 times daily, maximum daily dose 150 mg
  • Diclofenac Injection: For adults usual dose is 1 ampoule daily, in serious cases may be increased up to 2 ampoules daily
  • Diclofenac Gel: For external use only, applied to the skin 3-4 times daily, rubbed in lightly

  • Lithium and digoxin
  • Anticoagulants
  • Antidiabetic agents
  • Cyclosporin
  • Methotrexate
  • Quinolone antimicrobials
  • Other NSAIDs and steroids

Contraindications

  • Patients hypersensitive to any ingredient
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac
  • Asthmatic patients with asthma, urticaria, acute rhinitis precipitated by acetylsalicylic acid or other drugs with prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor. Not to be used under occlusive airtight dressings

Pregnancy & Lactation

Should be employed only for compelling reasons during pregnancy. Lowest effective dose should be used. Not recommended during the first trimester. Not recommended during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Close observation in patients with peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Close observation in patients of advanced age
  • Avoid contact with eyes or mucus membranes
  • Hand hygiene after application
  • Do not ingest
