Pharmacology

Complex of iodine and povidone polymer
Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
Lower toxicity than elemental iodine
Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts

Non-staining
Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water

Dosage & Administration

Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice a week for prevention
Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed
Solution: Use as paint, spray, or wet soak
Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted with warm water
Gargle & Mouthwash: Gargle or rinse for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
Surgical Scrub: Use for preoperative and postoperative washing by operating personnel
Surgical Scrub: Use for preoperative use on patients
Powder: Apply a light dusting to the affected area

Contraindications

Can cause hypersensitivity reactions
Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
Avoid regular use in patients receiving lithium therapy
Avoid use in severely burnt patients without assessing serum iodide levels
Not to be used in serious cavities
Not to be used in children under the age of 2 years

Side Effects

Hypersensitivity reactions
Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
Systemic adverse effects in severe burns or large denuded areas
Interference with thyroid function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not recommended during pregnancy
Potential absorption of sufficient iodine to affect fetal thyroid
Usually compatible with breastfeeding, but consult a physician
Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women for Gargle & Mouthwash and Surgical Scrub

Precautions & Warnings

Consult a physician for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
Regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy should be avoided
Avoid prolonged use of Gargle & Mouthwash
Avoid regular use in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency for Surgical Scrub
Careful use on known iodine sensitivity for Powder
Patients experiencing blurred vision should not drive or use machinery after Ophthalmic Solution application
