Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
  • Bone and Joint Infections
  • Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea
  • Early Lyme Disease
  • Septicemia
  • Meningitis
  • Switch therapy (Injectable to oral)

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Beta lactamase inhibitor
  • Interferes with the transpeptidation process
  • Protects from degradation by beta lactamase enzymes

Dosage & Administration

  • 250 mg b.i.d. for adolescents and adults
  • 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d for paediatric patients
  • Different dosage for different conditions such as pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, skin infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea, pneumonia, typhoid fever, and early Lyme disease

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration of probenecid increases serum concentration
  • Drug reducing gastric acidity may result in lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Pseudomembranous Colitis
