Indications
- Anxiety Disorder

Dosage & Administration
- Initiating dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg three times daily
- Maximum dose not to exceed 4 mg/day
- Individualized dosage for maximum beneficial effect
- Gradual dosage reduction when discontinuing therapy
- Starting dose of 0.25 mg in elderly patients or patients with advanced liver disease
- Administration of Alprazolam 1 mg once daily in the morning
Interaction
- CNS-depressant action aggravation by concomitant use of other psychotropic drugs, anticonvulsants, antihistaminics, alcohol, and oral contraceptives
Side Effects
- Side effects generally observed at the beginning of therapy
- Most frequent side effects: drowsiness and light-headedness
- Other potential side effects: depression, headache, confusion, dry mouth, constipation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category D - to be avoided in pregnancy
- Assumed excretion in breast milk - nursing not recommended
Precautions & Warnings
- Potential for psychological and physical dependence
- Caution in patients with hepatic or renal disease, chronic pulmonary insufficiency, or sleep apnea
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness not established in individuals below 18 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Manifestations of overdosage: somnolence, confusion, impaired coordination, diminished reflexes, and coma
- Employment of general supportive measures and immediate gastric lavage in cases of overdosage
