Pharmacology
- Reacts with gastric acid to produce salt and water
- Increases gastric pH to diminish pepsin activity
DosageAndAdministration
- 250 mg or 500 mg Tablet:
- Oral use
- Adult dose: 540-2000 mg per day
- Children dose: half of adult dose
- As dietary supplement: 1250-3750 mg per day
- 1000 mg Tablet:
- 2000-3000 mg when symptoms occur
- May be repeated hourly if needed
Interaction
- Enhances cardiac effects of digoxin
- Interferes with tetracycline absorption
- Modification of vitamin D therapy may be required in chronic renal failure

- Hypercalcaemia
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria
- Nephrolithiasis
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
