Indications

  • Reduces blood sugar levels
  • Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults

Pharmacology

  • Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
  • Facilitates Ca+2 transport across the beta-cell membranes
  • Decreases hepatic glucose output

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual initial dose is 40 to 80 mg daily
  • Maximum daily dose is 320 mg
  • Some forms can be taken before meals, while others are taken at breakfast time
  • Dose adjustment may be necessary based on response to treatment

Interaction

  • May interact with oral antidiabetics, GLP-1 receptor agonists, insulin, antibiotics, beta-blockers, antifungal medications, antidepressants, painkillers, and more
  • May strengthen or weaken the effects of certain medications
  • Drinking alcohol is not recommended

Contraindications

  • Allergy to gliclazide or related medicines
  • Insulin-dependent diabetes
