Description
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Oral antidiabetic medicine belonging to the sulphonylurea group
- Used in adults with type 2 diabetes Mellitus
- Diet, exercise, and weight loss may not sufficiently control blood sugar levels
- Stimulates release of insulin from pancreatic cells
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage
- Usual initial dose of 40 to 80 mg daily
- Dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily in divided doses when needed
- Tablet should be taken before meal
- Modified release preparation
- Recommended daily dose of one to four tablets (maximum of 120 mg)
- Oral use with a glass of water at breakfast time
Interaction
- May interact with oral antidiabetics, GLP-1 receptor agonists, insulin, antibiotics, beta-blockers, ACE-inhibitors, fluconazole, corticosteroids, alcohol, and more
- May increase the effects of medicines that reduce blood clotting
- Drinking alcohol is not recommended due to unpredictable impact on diabetes control
Contraindications
- Allergic to gliclazide or related medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
- Presence of ketone bodies and sugar in urine
- Severe kidney or liver disease
- Breastfeeding
