Description
- Glimitus is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower the blood glucose in patients with noninsulin dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
- Decreases blood glucose concentration
- Decrease in blood pressure
- Not suitable for the treatment of insulin dependent (type I) diabetes mellitus
Dosage
- Usual initial dose is 1 mg once daily
- Dose can be increased based on regular blood sugar monitoring
- Timing and distribution of doses are decided by the physician
- Initial and maintenance doses are set based on the results of regular check of glucose in blood and urine
Administration
- Tablet must be swallowed with sufficient amount of liquid
Interaction
- Drugs which may potentiate the hypoglycaemic action of Glimitus include ACE inhibitors, anabolic steroids, and salicylates
- Drugs which may attenuate the hypoglycaemic action of Glimitus include barbiturates, corticosteroids, and diuretics
Contraindications
- Not suitable for the treatment of insulin dependent (type I) diabetes mellitus
- Must not be used in patients hypersensitive to Glimepiride, severe hepatic dysfunction, and severe impairment of renal function
Side effects
- Hypoglycaemia
- Temporary visual impairment
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Pregnancy and lactation
- Must not be taken during pregnancy
- Ingestion with breast milk feeding may harm the child
Precautions and warnings
- In the initial weeks of treatment, the risk of hypoglycaemia may be increased and necessitates careful monitoring
Overdose effects
- Overdosage can produce hypoglycaemia
- Severe hypoglycaemic reactions with coma, seizure, or other neurological impairment occur infrequently
