Description

  • A broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic for intravenous administration

Indications

  • Treatment of pneumonia
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of intra-abdominal infections
  • Treatment of gynaecological infections
  • Treatment of skin and skin structure infections
  • Treatment of meningitis
  • Treatment of septicaemia
  • Treatment of pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis
  • Empiric treatment for presumed infections in patients with febrile neutropenia

Mode of action

  • Bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Potent bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria

Dosage

  • 500 mg to 1 gm by intravenous administration every 8 hours for adults
  • 10 to 40 mg/kg intravenously every 8 hours for children (3 months to 12 years)
  • Dosage and duration of therapy based on type, severity of infection, and the patient's condition

Administration

  • Intravenous infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes
  • Intravenous bolus (5 to 20 ml) over approximately 3-5 minutes

Interaction

  • Competes with Probenecid for active tubular secretion
  • May reduce serum valproic acid levels

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Meropenem

Pregnancy lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to nursing women

Precautions warnings

  • Allergic reaction may require discontinuation of the drug and appropriate measures
  • Use in patients with hepatic disease should be carefully monitored

Special populations

  • Dosage adjustments in renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 51 ml/min)
  • No dosage adjustments necessary in hepatic impairment
  • No dosage adjustments necessary in elderly patients unless creatinine clearance is < 51 ml/min
  • Efficacy and tolerability not established in infants under 3 months

Overdose effects

  • Symptomatic treatment for accidental overdose
  • Rapid renal elimination in normal individuals
  • Hemodialysis for removal in subjects with renal impairment
