  • Treatment of septicaemia
  • Treatment of pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis
  • Empiric treatment for presumed infections in patients with febrile neutropenia

Pharmacology

Bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis

Dosage

  • Recommended daily dosage for adults
  • Usual dose for adults
  • Dosage for adults with pneumonia, urinary tract infections, gynaecological infections
  • Dosage for adults with nosocomial pneumonia, peritonitis, presumed infections in neutropenic patients and septicaemia
  • Dosage for adults with intra-abdominal infections
  • Dosage for adults with cystic fibrosis
  • Dosage for adults with meningitis
  • Dosage for children
  • Dosage for children with intra-abdominal infections
  • Dosage for children with cystic fibrosis
  • Dosage for children with meningitis

  • Dosage for children over 50 kg weight
  • No experience in children with hepatic or renal impairment

Administration

Intravenous infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes or as intravenous bolus over approximately 3-5 minutes

Interaction

  • Competes with Probenecid for active tubular secretion
  • May reduce serum valproic acid levels

Hypersensitivity to the product

Precautions & Warnings

Discontinue if allergic reaction occurs, use with careful monitoring in patients with hepatic disease

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage reduction in patients with creatinine clearance less than 51 ml/min
  • No dosage adjustments for hepatic impairment
  • Elderly patients dosage adjustments if creatinine clearance is <51 ml/min
  • Efficacy and tolerability not established in infants under 3 months

Overdose Effects

Accidental overdose could occur; treatment should be symptomatic
