Indications

  • Treatment of single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, and hydatid

Pharmacology

  • Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
  • Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
  • Binds and inhibits parasite tubulin polymerization
  • Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended doses for adults, children over 2 years, children of 1-2 years, and children under 1 year
  • Treatment of hydatid disease (echinococcosis)
  • Additional dose for cystic echinococcosis and alveolar echinococcosis
  • Treatment for giardiasis

Interaction

  • No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions

Contraindications

  • Not indicated for use in neonates
  • Possible reduction in dosage for children weighing less than 10 kg
  • Avoid use in pregnancy and lactation
  • No evidence to alter dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
