Indications
- Treatment of single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, and hydatid
Pharmacology
- Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Binds and inhibits parasite tubulin polymerization
- Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended doses for adults, children over 2 years, children of 1-2 years, and children under 1 year
- Treatment of hydatid disease (echinococcosis)
- Additional dose for cystic echinococcosis and alveolar echinococcosis
- Treatment for giardiasis
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not indicated for use in neonates
- Possible reduction in dosage for children weighing less than 10 kg
- Avoid use in pregnancy and lactation
- No evidence to alter dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
