Indications

  • Short-term management of acute post-operative pain
  • Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
  • Decrease eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies

Description

  • Pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Chemical name: 5 benzoyle-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroligine-1-carboxylic acid, compound with 2 - amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (1:1)
  • Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
  • Metabolized in the liver

Pharmacology

  • Potent analgesic
  • Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system
  • Demonstrates minimal anti-inflammatory effect at its analgesic dose

Dosage & Administration

  • Tablet: Recommended dose of 10 mg every 4-6 hours for short-term use
  • Injection: Single or multiple doses for management of acute pain
  • Injection: Administered IV or IM, with specific doses based on age, weight, and renal function
  • Eye Drops: Adult dosage is 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Enhanced side effects with other NSAIDs or aspirin
  • Enhanced anti-coagulant effect with anti-coagulants
  • Reduced anti-hypertensive effect with beta blockers
  • Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE inhibitors
  • Enhanced toxicity of methotrexate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs
  • Children under 16 years of age
  • Prophylactic analgesic before surgery

  • Discontinue use if evidence of corneal epithelial breakdown
  • Not to be used while wearing contact lenses
