Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Reduce risk of cardiovascular death in type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease
Pharmacology
- Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor
- Glucuretic effect
- Reduces hyperglycemia
- Assists weight loss
- Lowers blood pressure
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose: 10 mg once daily
- Can be increased to 25 mg once daily
- Morning intake
- With or without food
Interaction
- With diuretics increases urine volume
- With insulin or insulin secretagogues increases risk for hypoglycemia
- SGLT2 inhibitors lead to positive urine glucose tests
- Interference with 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) assay
Contraindications
- History of serious hypersensitivity reaction
- Severe renal impairment
- End-stage renal disease
- Dialysis

- Increased thirstiness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy if benefit outweighs risk
- Not recommended during breastfeeding

- Assess renal function before initiation
- Not for patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m²
- No dose adjustment needed for eGFR ≥45 ml/min/1.73 m²

- Employ supportive measures in case of overdose
- Non-studied removal by hemodialysis
