Indications
- Treatment of endometriosis
- Reduction of pelvic pain in women with endometriosis
Pharmacology
- Agonist at the progesterone receptor
- Causes endometrial atrophy
- Reduces endogenous production of oestradiol
- Promotes antiangiogenic effects on endometrial tissue
Dosage & Administration
- 2 mg daily dosage
- Can be started on any day of the menstrual cycle
- Continuous administration without regard to vaginal bleeding
Interaction
- Metabolized mainly by the cytochrome P450 3A4 system
- Affected by CYP3A4 inhibitors and inducers
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to dienogest or its excipients
- Active venous thromboembolic disorder
- Arterial and cardiovascular diseases
- Diabetes mellitus with vascular involvement
- Severe hepatic disease
- Liver tumors
- Sex hormone-dependent malignancies
- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
