Indications

  • Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients on dialysis and not on dialysis

Description

  • Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO)
  • Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
  • Has a 165 amino acid sequence identical to that of human urinary EPO
  • Apparent molecular weight of erythropoietin is about 30,400 daltons

Dosage

  • Evaluation of Iron Stores and Nutritional Factors before and during treatment
  • Monitoring hemoglobin levels at least weekly until stable, then at least monthly
  • Adjusting therapy based on hemoglobin rate of rise, ESA responsiveness, and hemoglobin variability
  • Initiating Erythropoietin alfa treatment based on hemoglobin levels
  • Dose adjustments for patients with CKD on dialysis and not on dialysis
  • Starting dose for Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients

Contraindications

  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
  • Patients developing Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin

Side Effects

  • Adverse reactions observed in Epomax treated patients in clinical studies
  • Specific adverse reactions for patients with CKD, Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients, Cancer Patients on Chemotherapy, Surgery Patients, and Premature infants

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Absence of adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Reproduction toxicology observed in animal studies
  • Caution advised in pregnancy and lactation
  • Unknown excretion of exogenous Erythropoietin alfa in human milk

Overdose Effects
