Description
Calcium ion influx inhibitor
Pharmacology
- Type: L-type calcium channel blocker
- Activity: Antiarrhythmic, antianginal, antihypertensive
- Duration of Action: Short for immediate-release, prolonged for extended-release
Dosage & Administration
- Individualized by titration
- Administered with food
- Different doses for hypertension, angina, arrythmias
- Intravenous dosage for adults and children
Interaction
- May increase plasma level with CYP3A4 inhibitors
- May decrease plasma level with CYP3A4 inducers
- Increased risk of bleeding with aspirin
- Potentiate hypotensive effect with diuretics, antihypertensives, vasodilators
- May potentiate neurotoxic effect of lithium
Contraindications
- Severe left ventricular dysfunction
- Hypotension or cardiogenic shock
- Sick sinus syndrome
- Second or third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block
- Known hypersensitivity to verapamil hydrochloride
