Description

Picolax is a sodium picosulfate-based stimulant laxative used for the relief of constipation, bowel clearance before medical procedures, and promotion of regular stools.

DosageAndAdministration

  • 10 mg Tablet Dose:
    • Adults and children over 10 years of age: 5-10 mg per day
    • Children aged 4-10 years: 2.5-5 mg per day
  • Oral Solution (5 mg/5 ml) Dose:
    • Adults and children over 10 years of age: 5-10 ml or one to two teaspoonful per day
    • Children aged 4-10 years: 2.5-5 ml or half to one teaspoonful per day
    • Children from One month to 4 years of age: 0.25 ml/kg body weight per day
  • Concentrated Oral Solution (7.5 mg/ml) Dose:
    • Adults and children over 10 years of age: 0.67-1.33 ml per day
    • Children aged 4-10 years: 0.33-0.67 ml per day

Indications

  • Constipation of any etiology
  • Relief from prolonged & recurrent constipation
  • Bowel clearance before surgery, childbirth or radiological investigations

Pharmacology

Sodium Picosulfate acts locally in the colon, stimulating colonic peristalsis, promoting water and electrolyte accumulation, reducing transit time, and softening the stool.

Interaction

Concomitant use of diuretics or adreno-corticosteroids may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance. Concurrent administration of antibiotics may reduce the laxative action of Picolax.

Contraindications

  • Ileus or intestinal obstruction
  • Severe painful and/or feverish acute abdominal conditions
  • Acute inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Severe dehydration
  • Known hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any other component of the product

PregnancyAndLactation

Use of the drug should be avoided during the first trimester. Clinical data show that neither the active moiety of sodium Picosulfate nor its glucuronides are excreted into the milk of healthy lactating females.

PrecautionsAndWarnings

Prolonged excessive use may lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance and hypokalemia. Harmful for those suffering from alcoholism. To be taken into account in pregnant or breast-feeding women, children and high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy.

OverdoseEffects

Chronic overdosage may cause chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypokalemia, secondary hyperaldosteronism, renal calculi, renal tubular damage, metabolic alkalosis, and muscle weakness.
