Indications
- Prophylaxis against arterial occlusive events
- Mild to moderate pain
- Chronic disease accompanied by pain and inflammation
- Antipyretic
Pharmacology
Decreases platelet aggregation, inhibits thrombus formation, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for pain, inflammatory diseases, and as an antipyretic
- Recommended dosage for suspected acute coronary syndrome
- Recommended dosage after myocardial infarction
- Recommended dosage for acute ischaemic stroke/Transient ischaemic stroke (TIA)
- Recommended dosage following bypass surgery
Interaction
Enhances effect of anticoagulants, oral hypoglycaemic agents, phenytoin, and sodium valproate. Inhibits the uricosuric effect of probenecid and may increase the toxicity of sulphonamides. May precipitate bronchospasm or induce asthma attacks.
Contraindications
- Contradicted for children less than 12 years old (Reye's syndrome)
- Contradicted for breastfeeding women
- Contradicted for active peptic ulcer
- Contradicted for bleeding due to haemophilia, intracranial haemorrhage, and other ulceration
Side Effects
Mild side effects including nausea, dyspepsia, gastrointestinal ulceration, and bronchospasm
Pregnancy & Lactation
Aspirin should not be used during the last 3 months of pregnancy unless directed by a doctor. Caution advised for lactating mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Administer cautiously in asthma, uncontrolled blood pressure, and pregnant women. Also administer with caution to patients with nasal polyp and nasal allergy.
Overdose Effects
Produces dizziness, tinnitus, sweating, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and hyperventilation. Gross overdosage may lead to CNS depression with coma, cardiovascular collapse, and respiratory depression. Treatment includes gastric lavage and forced alkaline diuresis. Severe cases may require hemodialysis.
