Indications
- Relief of discomfort in urinary tract infections

Pharmacological Action
- Systemic alkalizer
- Metabolized to Potassium Bicarbonate
- Alkalinizes urine without causing systemic alkalosis

Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 10 ml 3 times daily, diluted with 1 glass of water
- Child (1-6 years) dosage: 5 ml 3 times daily, diluted with 1/2 glass of water
- Adult dosage for kidney stones, gout prevention, and kidney disease-induced acidosis: 10-15 ml 4 times daily, diluted with 1 glass of water
- Pediatric dosage for kidney stones, gout prevention, and kidney disease-induced acidosis: 5-10 ml 4 times daily, diluted with 1/2 glass of water

Concurrent administration may lead to toxicity
Contraindications
Severe renal impairment, untreated Addison's disease, acute dehydration, severe myocardial damage, hyperkalemia
Side Effects
- Well tolerated in patients with normal renal function and urinary output
- Caution needed in patients with abnormal renal mechanisms to avoid hyperkalemia or alkalosis
- Potassium intoxication symptoms: listlessness, weakness, mental confusion, tingling of extremities

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with low urinary output
- Dilution with water to minimize gastrointestinal injury
- Preferably taken after meals
- Large doses may cause hyperkalemia and alkalosis, especially in the presence of renal disease
Overdose Effects
- Rarely causes serious hyperkalemia in persons with normal excretory mechanisms
- Immediate treatment required if hyperkalemia occurs
- Treatment measures: elimination of potassium-containing foods or medications, intravenous administration of dextrose solution, use of exchange resins, hemodialysis, or peritoneal dialysis
