Description

  • An orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily for severe infections
  • Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day, as a single dose or in two divided doses
  • Dosage in Renal Impairment: Normal dose and schedule may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Clinical efficacy demonstrated against Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, etc.

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients, caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Central nervous system: headache and dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, drug fever
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Use in pregnancy and lactation should be avoided unless considered essential by the physician

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • Orcef is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  • Adverse reactions in healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from the profile seen in patients treated at recommended doses
