Description
- An orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Storage Conditions

Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily for severe infections
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day, as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Dosage in Renal Impairment: Normal dose and schedule may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater

- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Clinical efficacy demonstrated against Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, etc.
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients, caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system: headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, drug fever
- Hematological and clinical chemistry: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Use in pregnancy and lactation should be avoided unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- Orcef is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from the profile seen in patients treated at recommended doses
