Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections

Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Approximately 40-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual treatment duration of 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage adjustment for severe renal impairment
- Specific doses recommended for different age groups
- Dosage adjustment in case of impaired renal function
Interaction
- Potential increases in prothrombin times
- Caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects

- Mild and self limiting adverse reactions observed
- Frequent gastrointestinal disturbances - diarrhea and stool changes
- Less frequent gastrointestinal side-effects - nausea, abdominal pain

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Possible alteration of normal flora of the colon due to broad spectrum antibiotic treatment
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
- No specific antidote available
- No significant removal via hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
