Indications
- Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
- Relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
Pharmacology
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties
- Mode of action involves inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Available in 500 mg and 750 mg tablet forms
- Recommended starting dose of 1000 mg as a single dose
- May be taken with or without food
- Dosage not to exceed 2000 mg per day
- Caution in patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency
- Not established for use in pediatric patients
Interaction
- NSAIDs may diminish the antihypertensive effect of ACE-inhibitors
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients
- Not to be given to patients with asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Contraindicated for peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, and more
- Central Nervous System effects like dizziness and headache
- Dermatologic reactions like pruritus and rash
- Miscellaneous effects including edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Not recommended for use in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Associated with renal papillary necrosis and abnormal renal pathology in animals
- NSAID therapy discontinuation typically followed by recovery to pretreatment state
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms limited to lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting
- Gastrointestinal bleeding can occur
- Anaphylactoid reactions reported with therapeutic ingestion of NSAIDs and may occur following an overdose
- No specific antidotes available
- Supportive care recommended
