Dosage

  • 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days
  • Oral dose for sexually transmitted diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis
  • Different oral doses for children based on body weight
  • 500 mg intravenous dose for adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia
  • 500 mg intravenous dose for adult patients with pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Safety and effectiveness not established for children or adolescents under 16 years

Administration

  • Oral administration
  • Reconstitution procedure for suspension
  • Should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal

Use in special populations

  • No dose adjustment needed in patients with mild renal impairment
  • Caution in using azithromycin in patients with severe renal impairment
  • Not to be used in patients with hepatic disease
  • No effect on a patient’s ability to drive or operate machinery

Overdose effects

  • Typical symptoms of overdosage with macrolide antibiotics
  • Hearing loss
  • Severe nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Gastric lavage indicated
