Indications

  • Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults and children from 10 years of age
  • May be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or with insulin
  • Reduction of diabetic complications in overweight type 2 diabetic adult patients treated with metformin as first-line therapy after diet failure

Pharmacology

  • Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
  • Lowers both basal and postprandial plasma glucose
  • Decreases hepatic glucose production
  • Decreases intestinal absorption of glucose
  • Improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization
  • Does not produce hypoglycemia

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage must be individualized for effectiveness and tolerance
  • Multiple dosage options for immediate release and extended release tablets for adults and children
  • Specific dosing guidelines for renal impaired patients

Interaction

  • Potential interactions with Furosemide, Nifedipine, Cationic drugs, Cimetidine, and other drugs causing hyperglycemia

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to active substance or excipients
  • Acute metabolic acidosis
  • Severe renal failure (GFR <30 mL/min)
