Description

- Used for asthma, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and allergic rhinitis

DosageInstructions
- Adult dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 5 mg tablet for 6-14 years, 4 mg tablet for 2-5 years, 4 mg oral granules for 6 months to 5 years
- No adjustment needed in hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Similar efficacy in elderly patients

- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR) - Seasonal & Perennial
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Interactions
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs (theophylline, prednisone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin, warfarin)
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
SideEffects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, suicidal tendencies
PregnancyAndLactation
- Crosses the placenta in animals
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother
PrecautionsAndWarnings
- Not for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Should not be abruptly substituted for corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise induced bronchospasm
- Patients with known aspirin sensitivity should continue avoidance
OverdoseEffects
- No adverse experiences in the majority of overdosage reports
- Adverse experiences consistent with the safety profile of the product
- Usual supportive measures should be employed in the event of overdose
