Indications
- Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcer

Pharmacology
- Inhibitor of gastric acid secretion
- Blocks hydrogen-potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system
- Onset of antisecretory effect within one hour
- Maximum effect occurring within two hours
- Inhibition of secretion lasts up to 72 hours
- Gradual return of secretory activity over 3 to 5 days upon discontinuation

Interaction

Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to omeprazole

Side Effects
- Skin rash, urticaria, and pruritus
- Photosensitivity, bullous eruption, and erythema multiforme
- Diarrhoea, headache, constipation, nausea/vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Dizziness, light headedness, and feeling faint
- Mental confusion, agitation, depression, and hallucinations
- Arthritic and myalgic symptoms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adverse effects on pregnancy or the fetus/newborn child based on epidemiological studies
- Safe use during pregnancy
- No information on passage into breast milk or effects on the neonate
- Recommendation to discontinue breast-feeding if essential use is considered
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid concomitant use with clopidogrel
- Association with increased risk for osteoporosis-related fractures
- Atrophic gastritis noted in long-term treatment
- Potential for concomitant use with methotrexate leading to toxicities
