Indications

Reduces blood sugar levels
Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
When diet, exercise, and weight loss alone do not have an adequate effect on keeping blood sugar at the correct level

Pharmacology

Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
Facilitates Ca+2 transport across beta-cell membranes
Decreases hepatic glucose output

Dosage & Administration

Usual initial dose 40 to 80 mg daily
Dose can be increased up to 320 mg daily
To be taken before meal
Children usage is contraindicated

Interaction

Strengthened effect with other blood sugar lowering medicines
Weakened effect with certain medicines
Increased effects with medicines reducing blood clotting
