Indications

  • Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology

  • Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
  • Relaxes smooth muscle in the bladder neck and prostate
  • Improves urine flow rate
  • Reduces symptoms of BPH
  • Absorption is essentially complete (90%) following oral administration under fasting conditions
  • Extensively metabolized by cytochrome P 450 enzymes in the liver

Dosage & Administration

  • Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily, to be taken after meal at night
  • Dose may be increased to 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily after 2 to 4 weeks if necessary
  • Capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water

Interaction

  • Concurrent administration of other alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
  • No interactions seen with atenolol, enalapril or nifedipine
  • Cimetidine may raise and frusemide may lower plasma levels of Taspia
  • Diclofenac and warfarin may increase the elimination rate of Taspia

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
  • History of orthostatic hypotension
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency
  • Caution for reduction in blood pressure and syncope
  • Examination to exclude other conditions before therapy

  • Dizziness
  • Abnormal ejaculation
  • Headache
  • Asthenia
  • Postural hypotension
  • Palpitations

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use

Precautions & Warnings

  • Rare transient postural symptoms after first dose
  • Use not advised in patients with micturition syncope
  • Patient awareness of potential dizziness

Overdose Effects

  • Acute hypotension likely after overdosage
  • Cardiovascular support required
  • Renal function monitoring
  • General supportive measures
  • Emesis, gastric lavage, activated charcoal may be administered in case of large overdosage
