Indication
- Monotherapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and adolescents from 16 years
- Adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults, adolescents, children, and infants from 1 month
- Treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years
- Treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and adolescents from 12 years
Mechanism of Action

- Minimal activity in submaximal stimulation and threshold tests
- Inhibition of burst firing without affecting normal neuronal excitability
Dosage
- Initial starting dose of 250 mg twice daily for adults and adolescents from 16 years
- Maximum dose of 1500 mg twice daily for adults and adolescents
- Initial therapeutic dose of 500 mg twice daily for adults and adolescents (≥18 years) and weighing 50 kg or more
- Use of oral solution for pediatric population
Administration
- Oral administration
- Swallowed with sufficient liquid
- Can be taken with or without food
- Administered in two equally divided doses
Interaction
- No influence on serum concentrations of existing antiepileptic medicinal products
- Inhibition of renal clearance of the primary metabolite by probenecid
- Decreased methotrexate clearance when used concomitantly with Levetira
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to active substance or excipients
Side Effects
- Most common adverse reactions: somnolence, asthenia, infection, dizziness (adults)
- Most common adverse reactions: fatigue, aggression, nasal congestion, decreased appetite, irritability (pediatric)
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy
- Excretion in human breast milk
