Description

Benzimidazole anthelmintic with vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity

Pharmacology

Blocks glucose uptake in helminths, exerts anthelmintic effect by inhibiting tubulin polymerization, extensively metabolized in the liver

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended single dose for adults & children over 2 years: 400 mg
  • Recommended dose for children of 1-2 years: 200 mg
  • Not recommended for children under 1 year
  • In hydatid disease (Echinococcosis): 400 mg twice daily for patients over 60 kg, 15 mg/kg body weight daily for patients less than 60 kg

Contraindications

  • Not for use in neonates
  • Consider dosage reduction in children <10 kg
  • Avoid in pregnancy and lactation
  • No need for dosage alteration in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
