Indications
- Eczema in children and adults including atopic
- Infantile and descoid eczema
- Prurigo nodularis
- Psoriasis (excluding wide spread plaque psoriasis)
- Neurodermatoses including lichen simplex and lichen planus
- Seborrhoic dermatitis
- Contact sensitivity reaction
- Discoid lupus erythematoses and may be used as adjunct to systemic steroid therapy in generalized erythroderma
Pharmacology
- Synthetic adrenocorticosteroid
- Glucocorticoid in nature
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antipruritic
- Vasoconstrictive activity
- Effective for dermatological use
- Absorbed from the skin
- Increased absorption with inflammation or disease process in the skin
- Increased absorption with occlusive dressings
Dosage & Administration
- Apply sparingly to the affected area two or three times daily until improvement occurs
- Twice daily or less after improvement
- Maximum duration of therapy is three weeks
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the preparation
- Contraindicated in rosacea & acne vulgaris
- Contraindicated in perioral dermatitis, perianal & genital pruritis
- Contraindicated in viral infections of the skin e.g. herpes simplex & chicken pox
- Contraindicated in primary infected skin lesions caused by fungi or bacteria
- Contraindicated in dermatoses in children under one year of age

- Features of hypercorticolism
- Telangiectasia

- Perioral dermatitis
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Maceration of the skin
- Acneform eruption
- Exacerbation of symptoms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for extensive use in pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Well-tolerated, but stop application if signs of hypersensitivity appear
- Avoid long-term continuous topical therapy, particularly in children to prevent adrenal suppression
- Systemic absorption may occur with extensive areas of treatment
- Atrophic changes may occur after prolonged treatment on face or other areas
- Care should be taken to prevent the preparation from entering the eye if applied to the eyelids
- Withdraw topical corticosteroid therapy if infection spreads
