Indications
- Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) of arteriosclerotic or diabetic origin
- Trophic lesions (e.g. leg ulcers and gangrene)
- Cerebral vascular diseases
- Circulatory disturbances of the eye in conjunction with degenerative vascular disorders
Pharmacology
- Improves flow properties of blood
- Decreases blood viscosity
- Increases blood flow to affected microcirculation
- Enhances tissue oxygenation
- Improves erythrocyte flexibility
- Modifies leukocyte properties
- Increases leukocyte deformability
- Inhibits neutrophil adhesion and activation
- Increases tissue oxygen levels
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dosage is 400 mg pentoxifylline 2 to 3 times daily
- Tablets are to be swallowed whole during or shortly after a meal with sufficient amounts of liquid
Interaction
- Blood-sugar-lowering effect potentiation
- Increased anti-coagulant activity
- Blood-pressure-lowering effect potentiation
- Increased theophylline levels
- Increased serum concentration
- Potential additive effect with platelet aggregation inhibitors
- Increased plasma concentration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to pentoxifylline or other methylxanthines
- Massive bleeding
- Extensive retinal bleeding

- Dose reduction required in renal impairment
- Start treatment at low-dose levels in hypotensive patients
