Indications

  • Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) of arteriosclerotic or diabetic origin
  • Trophic lesions (e.g. leg ulcers and gangrene)
  • Cerebral vascular diseases
  • Circulatory disturbances of the eye in conjunction with degenerative vascular disorders

Pharmacology

  • Improves flow properties of blood
  • Decreases blood viscosity
  • Increases blood flow to affected microcirculation
  • Enhances tissue oxygenation
  • Improves erythrocyte flexibility
  • Modifies leukocyte properties
  • Increases leukocyte deformability
  • Inhibits neutrophil adhesion and activation
  • Increases tissue oxygen levels

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual dosage is 400 mg pentoxifylline 2 to 3 times daily
  • Tablets are to be swallowed whole during or shortly after a meal with sufficient amounts of liquid

  • Blood-sugar-lowering effect potentiation
  • Increased anti-coagulant activity
  • Blood-pressure-lowering effect potentiation
  • Increased theophylline levels
  • Increased serum concentration
  • Potential additive effect with platelet aggregation inhibitors

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to pentoxifylline or other methylxanthines
  • Massive bleeding
  • Extensive retinal bleeding
