Indications

• Treatment of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency
• Prophylaxis during pregnancy and lactation

Composition

• Elemental iron 50 mg (as carbonyl iron INN)
• Folic acid BP 500 microgram
• Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg

Pharmacology

• Combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate
• High bioavailability of Carbonyl Iron
• Low toxicity of Carbonyl Iron

Dosage & Administration

• Adult dosage: One Capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician

Interaction

• Carbonyl Iron decreases absorption of tetracycline antibiotics
• Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to any component
• Iron overload

Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea
• Dark stool
• Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Avoiding drug use during the first trimester if possible
• Justified prophylaxis during the remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

• Special care in patients with Iron overload states
• Failure to respond to treatment requires further investigations
• Risk of Zinc accumulation in renal failure

Overdose Effects

• Symptoms include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
