Indications
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Management of type 2 diabetes in overweight patients
- Recommended use in adults, children 10 years and older, and adolescents
Pharmacology
- Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
- Lowers basal and postprandial plasma glucose levels
- Mechanism of action differs from sulfonylureas
- Does not produce hypoglycemia
- Decreases hepatic glucose production
- Decreases intestinal absorption of glucose
- Improves insulin sensitivity
