  • Postoperative application to incisions
  • Oral moniliasis (thrush)
  • Bacterial and mycotic skin infections
  • Preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
  • Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
  • Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
  • Antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing by surgeons and operation theatre staff

  • Substitute for tear fluid in case of the unstable tear film or insufficient moistening of the eye surface

Pharmacology

  • Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
  • Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Activity against protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
  • Sporicidal
  • Non-staining
  • Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water

Dosage & Administration

  • Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
  • Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary
  • Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
  • Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water for gargle & mouthwash
  • Wet hands and forearms with water, pour about 5 mL of Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub on the palm of the hand and spread over both hands and forearms, rub the Scrub thoroughly over all areas for about five minutes, rinse thoroughly under running water for surgical scrub
  • Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area for powder
  • Instill 1 drop 4 times daily or as required into the conjunctival sac for ophthalmic solution

Interaction

  • Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
  • Concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to exhibit hypothyroidic effect

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Avoid use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
  • Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
  • Not to be used in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years

Side Effects

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
  • Systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function when applied to severe burns or large denuded areas of skin
  • Interferes with thyroid function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy
  • Usually compatible with breastfeeding (As per American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • No recommended administration during pregnancy and lactation for eye drops except for compelling reasons

Precautions & Warnings

  • Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, redness, irritation, swelling, pain, or infection
  • Avoid pooling beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
  • Avoid regular use as prolonged use may lead to the absorption of a significant amount of iodine
  • Special caution needed when regular applications to broken skin are made to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
  • Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
  • Contact lenses should not be worn during the instillation of the drug for ophthalmic solution
  • Patients who experience blurred vision after application should not drive or use machinery until their vision has cleared for ophthalmic solution

  • Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
