Indications
- Corrections of haemodynamic imbalance in acute hypotension or shock
- Adjunct after open heart surgery
- Chronic cardiac decompensation in congestive failure
Pharmacology
- Stimulation of alpha, beta, and dopamine receptors
- Positive chronotropic and inotropic effects on the myocardium
- Increases heart rate and cardiac contractility
Dosage
- Adult dose range: 2 to 50 micrograms/kg/min based on patient's condition
- Children under 12 years: Safety and efficacy not established
- Geriatric patients: No variation in dosage suggested
Administration
- Administered intravenously through suitable intravenous catheter or needle
- Rate of administration controlled with an intravenous drip chamber
Interaction
- Potentiated by monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI's)
- Antagonized by beta-adrenergic blocking agents
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to dopamine or any of its ingredients
- Phaeochromocytoma, uncorrected tachyarrhythmias, or ventricular fibrillation

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Utilization in pregnant women when expected benefits outweigh potential risk to fetus
- Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Should not be administered in the presence of uncorrected tachyarrhythmia
- Close monitoring required for patients with impaired renal and hepatic function
Overdose Effects
- Excessive blood pressure elevation
Reconstitution
- Must be diluted before administration to patients
- Stable for a minimum of 24 hours after dilution in sterile intravenous solutions
