Pharmacology
- Selective beta1-blocker
- Reduction of heart rate
- Reduction of blood pressure
- Interference with insulin release
- Less interference with cardiovascular response to hypoglycemia
Dosage & Administration
- Total daily dosage range: 100-400 mg
- Initial dosage for hypertension: 100 mg per day
- Initial dosage for angina: 50-100 mg two to three times daily
- Initial dosage for cardiac arrhythmia: 50-300 mg per day in divided doses
- Dosage for hyperthyroidism: 50 mg four times a day
- Oral therapy for myocardial infarction: 50 mg every 6 hours for 48 hours followed by 200 mg daily in divided doses
- Recommended starting dose for heart failure: 25-100 mg once daily
Interaction
- Additive effect with catecholamine-depleting drugs
- Increase in concentration with CYP2D6 inhibiting drugs
- Increased risk of bradycardia with digitalis glycosides
- Exacerbation of rebound hypertension with clonidine withdrawal

- Severe peripheral arterial disease
- Hypersensitivity to metoprolol or other B-blockers

- Caution in patients treated with calcium channel blockers
