Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by various strains
- Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis caused by various strains
- Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumoniae caused by various strains
- Skin and skin-structure infections caused by various strains
- Urinary tract infections caused by various strains
- Bone and Joint Infections caused by various strains
- Gonorrhoea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Early Lyme Disease (erythema migrans) caused by Borrelia burgdorferi
Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity
- Activity against β-lactamase producing strains
- Good stability to bacterial β-lactamase
Dosage
- Tablet or Suspension for Adolescents and adults (13 years and older)
- Tablet or Suspension for Paediatric Patients (3 months to 12 years)
- Parenteral dosage for Adults in various conditions
- Parenteral dosage for Children (above 3 months of age) in various conditions
- Recommended dose for surgical prophylaxis
- Dosage in Meningitis for Adults, Children, and Neonate
- Dosage in bone and joint infections for Adult and Children
Administration
- Use of freshly reconstituted solution recommended
- Potency maintained for at least 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours at 5C
Interaction
- No potentially hazardous interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Adverse effects occurred infrequently
- Mild and transient nature of effects
- Reported effects include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances
- Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non susceptible organisms e.g. Candida
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Cautious use during pregnancy if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Give with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Use with caution in patients with a history of colitis
- Cephalosporins may be given safely to patients hypersensitive to penicillin, cross reactions reported
