Indications
- Treatment of acromegaly
- Symptomatic treatment of metastatic carcinoid tumors
- Treatment of profuse watery diarrhea associated with VIP-secreting tumors
Pharmacology
Synthetic analogue of somatostatin which suppresses basal and stimulated secretion of growth hormone (GH) and other hormones
Dosage & Administration
- Intramuscular:
- Acromegaly: Initial dose 20 mg every 4 wk
- Variceal haemorrhage: Continuous IV infusion of 25 mcg/hr for 48 hr
- Prophylaxis of complications following pancreatic surgery: 100 mcg tid for 7 days
- Subcutaneous:
- Acromegaly: Initial dose 50 mcg tid, max 500 mcg tid
- HIV-associated diarrhoea: Initial dose 100 mcg tid, max 250 mcg tid
Interaction
May require dosage adjustment with concurrent therapy such as calcium channel blockers, oral hypoglycaemics, and beta-blockers
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the product
Side Effects
- Local pain, stinging, tingling at site of injection
- Gastrointestinal effects like anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Metabolic effects such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and hypothyroidism
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B - no fetal risk shown in animal-reproduction studies, but controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking

- Diabetes mellitus
- Pregnancy, lactation, children, elderly
Use in Special Populations
Dosage reduction may be necessary in cases of severe renal impairment requiring dialysis
