Indications
- Treats gastrointestinal worm infections
- Effective against roundworm, hookworm, pinworm, whipworm, threadworm
Pharmacology
- Active ingredient: Levamisole
- Paralyses susceptible intestinal worms
- Enhances cellular immune responses in humans
Dosage & Administration
- Single administration after a light meal
- Dosage varies based on age: 1-4 years, 5-15 years, 16 years and over
- Additional dose recommended for severe hookworm infection
Interaction
- May increase phenytoin toxicity
- Increases bioavailability of ivermectin
- Decreases bioavailability of albendazole
- Alcohol causes disulfiram-like reaction
Contraindications
- No absolute contraindications to the use of Levamisole
Side Effects
- Infrequent and mild
- Transient side effects: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache
- Encephalopathy-like syndrome reported in some patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Animal studies show no teratogenic effects
- Benefits should be weighed against potential dangers during pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- No evidence of sedation
- Mild and transient giddiness as infrequent side effect
- No precautions for driving or operating machinery
- Transient fever possible in case of concurrent microfilaraemia
Overdose Effects
- Counter anticholinesterase activity with atropine
- Control blood pressure and respiration
- Avoid sedatives
