Indications
- Fast & effective relief of Chest congestion
- Cough

Pharmacology
- Guaifenesin is an expectorant
- Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is a cough suppressant
- Menthol has local anesthetic and counterirritant qualities
Dosage & Administration
- 2 teaspoonful syrup (10 ml) every 6 hours for adults (12 years and over)
- Maximum 8 teaspoonful syrup (40 ml)/day for adults (12 years and over)
Interaction
- Possible reactions with acetaminophen / hydrocodone
- Diphenhydramine
- Escitalopram
- Acetaminophen / codeine
- Alprazolam
- Ondansetron
Contraindications
- Not to be taken with prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
- Not to be used for two weeks after stopping MAOI drug
Side Effects
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Gastrointestinal disturbance
- Feeling nervous, restless, anxious, or irritable
- Not for children less than 12 years of age
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA
- Recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk
- No data on the excretion of dextromethorphan-guaifenesin into human milk
- In nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue
- No human studies on the use of menthol during pregnancy; thus, its risk is undetermined
Precautions & Warnings
- Talk to a doctor before using if you have asthma
- Chronic lung disease or shortness of breath
- Persistent/chronic cough
- Taking a drug for depression, including monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor drugs
Overdose Effects
- Gastric emptying (emesis and/or gastric lavage) recommended for guaifenesin overdosage
- Excitement and mental confusion from Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide
- Respiratory depression from very high doses of Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide
- Toxicity symptoms from large amounts of Menthol
