Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
Doxophylline is a novel bronchodilator. It selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, and has decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors.
Dosage & Administration
- Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily or as prescribed by the physician
- Children:
- >12 years of age: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- 6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily
Interaction
Doxonil should not be administered with other xanthine preparations. Caution should be exercised with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs. Concurrent administration of certain drugs may reduce hepatic clearance.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives, patients with acute myocardial infarction, hypotension, and during lactation

Pregnancy & Lactation
Use of the drug during pregnancy should be evaluated carefully case by case. Contraindicated during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution in patients with certain conditions, monitoring blood levels in certain cases, and reduction of dosage in case of influencing factors. No risk of addiction or dependence.
Overdose Effects
Severe cardiac arrhythmias and tonic-clonic seizure may occur. Discontinuation of treatment may be necessary and symptomatic treatment should be instituted in case of overdose.
