Indications

  • Treatment of deep vein thrombosis
  • Treatment of unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction
  • Prevention of thrombus formation in extra-corporeal circulation during hemodialysis
  • Prophylaxis of venous thromboembolic disease in orthopedic or general surgery patients
  • Prophylaxis of venous thromboembolic disease in bedridden medical patients

Composition

  • Enoxaparin Sodium BP 20 mg equivalent to 2000 anti-Xa III in 0.2 ml pre-filled syringe
  • Enoxaparin Sodium BP 40 mg equivalent to 4000 anti-Xa III in 0.4 ml pre-filled syringe
  • Enoxaparin Sodium BP 60 mg equivalent to 6000 anti-Xa IU in 0.6 ml pre-filled syringe
  • Enoxaparin Sodium BP 80 mg equivalent to 8000 anti-Xa IU in 0.8 ml pre-filled syringe

Pharmacology

  • Low molecular weight heparin with high anti-Xa activity
  • Does not increase bleeding time at required doses
  • Primarily metabolised in the liver

Dosage

  • Subcutaneously administered for deep vein thrombosis
  • Oral anticoagulant therapy should be initiated when appropriate
  • Subcutaneously administered for unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, concurrently with aspirin
  • Recommended dose for prevention of thrombus formation in extra-corporeal circulation during hemodialysis
  • Doses for prophylaxis of venous thromboembolic disease in surgical and medical patients

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Enoxaparin Sodium, heparin or other low molecular weight heparins

  • Conditions with high risk of uncontrolled hemorrhage

Side Effects

  • Haemorrhage (bleeding)
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Elevations of serum aminotransferase
  • Skin reactions at injection sites
  • Cases of neuraxial hematomas with spinal anesthesia or puncture

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy category B
  • No evidence of Enoxaparin Sodium crossing the placental barrier in humans
  • Recommendation for use in pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Unknown excretion of Enoxaparin in human milk
  • Advice to consider discontinuing nursing or Enoxaparin, weighing the benefits to the mother and nursing infant

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in conditions with increased potential for bleeding
  • Recommendation for platelet counts measurement before and during treatment

Use in Special Populations

  • No dosage adjustment in elderly patients, unless kidney function is impaired
  • Observation for signs and symptoms of bleeding in patients with renal impairment
  • Caution in hepatically impaired patients

Overdose Effects

  • Potential hemorrhagic complications from accidental overdosage
  • Neutralization with slow i.v. injection of protamine sulfate
  • Dosage of protamine sulfate equal to the dose of Enoxaparin injected
