Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in children 12 years and over
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in children 12 years and over
Pharmacology
- H1 histamine receptor mediation
- Blockage of histamine and other inflammatory mediators release
- Prevention of activation and downstream effects of H1 receptors
- Selective affinity for H1 receptors
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults and children 12 years and older
- Recommended dosage for children from 6 to 11 years
- Recommended dosage for children from 2 to 11 years
- Special dosage instructions for impaired renal function
Interaction
- Non-interaction with hepatic mechanisms
- Increased plasma level with coadministration of erythromycin or ketoconazole
- No interaction with omeprazole
- Reduced bioavailability when coadministered with antacids
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness
- Common: nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions with manifestations such as angioedema, chest tightness, dyspnoea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy unless clearly necessary
- Not recommended for nursing mothers as it crosses into human breast milk
- No human data on the effect of Fexofenadine hydrochloride on fertility
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Special care in patients with cardiovascular disease history
- Unlikely to produce an effect on the ability to drive or use machines
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals over 65 years of age
Use in Special Populations
- Altered pharmacokinetics in individuals with renal impairment
- No substantial effect on the pharmacokinetics in moderate to severe hepatic disease
- Similar adverse events in elderly patients compared to those under 65 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Reported effects: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth
- No development of clinically significant adverse reactions at certain doses
- Standard measures and symptomatic treatment recommended
