Indications

  • Treatment of deep vein thrombosis, with or without pulmonary embolism
  • Treatment of unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction
  • Prevention of thrombus formation in the extra-corporeal circulation during haemodialysis
  • Prophylaxis of venous thromboembolic disease in surgical patients
  • Prophylaxis of venous thromboembolic disease in medical patients

Composition

  • Enoxaparin Sodium BP 20 mg equivalent to 2000 anti-Xa III
  • Enoxaparin Sodium BP 40 mg equivalent to 4000 anti-Xa III
  • Enoxaparin Sodium BP 60 mg equivalent to 6000 anti-Xa IU
  • Enoxaparin Sodium BP 80 mg equivalent to 8000 anti-Xa IU

Pharmacology

  • Low molecular weight heparin with high anti-Xa activity
  • Low anti-lla or antithrombin activity
  • No notable modification of activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT)

Dosage

  • Subcutaneously 100 anti-Xa IU/kg twice daily for 10 days
  • Subcutaneously 150 anti-Xa IU/kg once daily for 10 days
  • Subcutaneously 100 anti-Xa IU/kg twice daily for 2-8 days

Administration

  • Injectable by deep subcutaneous route
  • Should not be administered by the intramuscular route
  • Injection site preparation steps

Interaction

Discontinue agents affecting hemostasis prior to therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Enoxaparin Sodium, heparin or other low molecular weight heparins
  • Active major bleeding
  • High risk of uncontrolled hemorrhage

Side Effects

  • Haemorrhage (bleeding)
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Elevations of serum aminotransferase

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Category B (no evidence of crossing placental barrier)
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Unknown excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in conditions with increased potential for bleeding
  • Regular platelet count measurements

Use in Special Populations

  • Elderly patients dosage
  • Dose adjustments in renal impairment
  • Caution in hepatically impaired patients

Overdose Effects

Accidental overdosage may lead to hemorrhagic complications
