Indications
- Treatment of acute and chronic psychoses

Pharmacology
- Belongs to dibenzothiazepine derivatives
- Antagonist at serotonin and dopamine receptors

Dosage & Administration
- Administered twice daily
- Total daily dose titration
- Dose range of 150 to 750 mg/day for psychoses and schizophrenia
- Dose range of 200 to 800 mg/day for manic episodes
- Dose range of 300 to 600 mg/day for depressive episodes
- Usual effective dose range of 400 to 800 mg/day for manic episodes
Interaction
- Caution with medicines causing electrolyte imbalance
- Caution with medicines increasing QT interval
- Co-administration with thioridazine or carbamazepine increases clearance
- Co-administration with phenytoin increases clearance
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Quetiapine
Side Effects

- Withdrawal symptoms
- Elevations in serum triglyceride levels
- Elevations in total cholesterol
- Weight gain
- Decreased haemoglobin
- Extrapyramidal symptoms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety and efficacy not established during human pregnancy
- Use only if benefits justify potential risks
- Administer at lowest possible dose for shortest duration during pregnancy
- Degree of excretion into human milk is unknown
- Breastfeeding should be avoided while taking Quetiapine
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of suicidal thoughts and self-harm
- Caution in patients with cardiovascular disease
- Caution in patients with cerebrovascular disease
- Caution in patients predisposed to hypotension
- Caution in patients with history of seizures
- Consider dose reduction or discontinuation for tardive dyskinesia
- Discontinue in case of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
- Exercise caution in patients with cardiovascular disease or family history of QT prolongation
- Monitor for neutropenia
- Monitor for hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus
Use in Special Populations
- Use with caution in the elderly
- Slower rate of dose titration and lower daily therapeutic dose in the elderly
- Not indicated for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Survival reported with acute overdoses of up to 30 grams
- No specific antidote available
- Consider possibility of multiple drug involvement in severe intoxication
- Intensive care procedures recommended
- Close medical supervision and monitoring required
