Indications
- Treatment of all forms of dementia of the Alzheimer's type
- May be indicated in other types of dementia
Pharmacology
- Persistent activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors
- Excreted predominantly unchanged in the urine
- Mean volume of distribution is 9-11 L/kg
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended maintenance dose is 20 mg every day for adults and older patients
- Upward titration with 5 mg per week over 3 weeks to achieve the maintenance dose
Interaction
- Enhancement of effects of L-dopa, dopaminergic agonists, and anticholinergics by memantine
- Reduction of effects of barbiturates and neuroleptics by memantine
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Memantine Hydrochloride
