        Dosage and Administration

        Interaction

        • Risk of hypercalcemia with thiazide diuretics
        • Avoid hypocalcaemia in digitalized patients
        • Certain foods may reduce calcium absorption
        • Concomitant treatment with phenytoin or barbiturates can decrease Vitamin-D3 effect
        • Concomitant use of glucocorticoids can decrease Vitamin D3 effect
        • Calcium salts may reduce the absorption of other medications

        Contraindications

        • Absolute contraindications: hypercalcaemia, sarcoidosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, Vitamin-D3 overdosage, severe renal failure, hypersensitivity to ingredients
        • Relative contraindications: osteoporosis due to prolonged immobilization, renal stones, severe hypercalciuria

        Side Effects

        • Mild gastrointestinal disturbances
        • Occasional skin rash
        • Hypercalciuria and rare cases of hypercalcaemia with long-term high-dose treatment

        Pregnancy and Lactation

        • Increased requirement for calcium and vitamin-D3 during pregnancy and lactation
        • Caution in administering calcium and iron supplements together
        • Overdoses of vitamin-D3 can have teratogenic effects in pregnant animals
        • Passage of vitamin-D3 and its metabolites into breast milk

        Precautions and Warnings

        • Careful supervision in patients with mild to moderate renal failure or mild hypercalciuria
        • Periodic checks of plasma and urinary calcium levels
        • Urine calcium excretion measurements in patients with renal stones
        • Monitor serum and urinary calcium levels and kidney function during long-term treatment
